How to measure a mattress, in three steps

Most sheets fail at the corners, not the middle. A mattress that's slightly deeper, slightly wider, or simply not a stock size will fight a standard sheet every night.

Width: measure edge to edge across the top of the mattress, not the bed frame. Length: head to foot, along the top. Depth: the side seam, from the top surface to the floor of the mattress — include a topper if you always use one.
